Frequently Asked Questions
Is needing therapy a sign of weakness?
Absolutely not! Seeking therapy takes courage and is thereby a sign of strength, not weakness. Like athletes need coaches, a therapist provides specific support to help steer life’s many challenges and achieve your goals.
Isn’t medication enough?
Medication can certainly address many mental health symptoms, but often needs to be accompanied by therapy to address the root causes underlying many issues. Also, importantly, not everyone needs medication, or require its use long-term, to reach their goals. In these ways, therapy provides key additional support for lasting change.
Can I meet my therapist online?
Yes. After your consultation, you will receive instructions for setting up this service – called “telehealth” – using a computer, tablet, or phone. Google Chrome is the best browser for this service. If you are using an iPhone, you will be directed to download the Jane app.
What can I do to get the most out of therapy?
A great question! Active involvement can make a significant difference. Here are some tips to maximize your experience:
Arrive on time to get the full benefit of each session.
Be open and honest with your therapist. Share as much as you are comfortable with, and let them know if you are not ready to discuss something.
Find at least one thing from each session to practice or to reflect on before your next visit.
Review what worked or did not work in your follow-up sessions.
Discuss any needed adjustments to your treatment with your therapist.
How can I offer feedback?
We value your feedback and strive to provide excellent care. We would love you to share your positive experiences through online reviews and of course we would love to hear it from you in person too. Please note, online reviews are voluntary and identify you as a client of A Centered Life.
For concerns, we encourage you to speak with your therapist or contact our care team. If you prefer, you may also reach the Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board at (785) 296-3240. Your safety and ethical treatment matter to us.
What Is the cost of therapy?
Clarity on this matter is essential to good care. Our costs are based on service and clinician and can be found on our Pricing page.
Is a therapist able to give me a diagnosis?
Yes, therapists at A Centered Life are trained and skilled in diagnosing mental health conditions. While we can provide diagnoses and develop treatment plans, some cases may require additional testing or assessments by a psychologist, medical doctor, or specialist, especially for educational plans, medication prescriptions, or detailed treatment development.
What is the proper etiquette while at A Centered Life?
Please arrive on time, as sessions begin as scheduled and will not be extended for late arrivals. If more than 10 minutes late, you may need to reschedule.
Turn off your phone during sessions.
Please be quiet in the lobby so those in therapy are not distracted from their treatment.
If your child is in therapy, stay in the clinic as your participation may be needed.
Children under 10 cannot be left unattended; supervisors must be at least 12.
Avoid bringing children to individual sessions to prevent distractions.
Only certified service animals with documentation are allowed.
No smoking, vaping, drugs, or alcohol are permitted.
A Centered Life is committed to being a Safe Space, fostering emotional, spiritual, psychological, sexual, and physical well-being. If concerns arise, inform your therapist or office staff.
Why not just find a friend to talk to?
Good friends are essential, but a therapist is distinguished by the expert training and unique perspective into thoughts and behaviors, their causes, and solutions to difficult problems. Therapists provide professional, confidential, and unbiased analysis that go beyond casual conversation.
What can I expect in my first session?
Your first counseling session, known as the “intake,” will introduce you to your clinician, cover necessary paperwork, and help you better grasp the therapy process. Your therapist may discuss certain experiences, symptoms, or relevant background matters, and will likely set some goals for future sessions.
How long does therapy take?
The length of therapy varies based on your goals, symptoms, and needs. You’re welcome to discuss this during your free consultation and throughout treatment. Our focus is on helping you achieve your goals, not prolonging therapy.
What else should I know about telehealth?
Do consider these things first, about doing therapy through telehealth:
Remote therapy is not the same experience as in-person client/therapist visitation.
Risks include call interruptions, unauthorized access, or other technical problems. You may reschedule if interrupted by such issues.
Billing is handled like in-person visits: copays, deductibles, and late cancellation/no-show fees still apply.
If your session ends while your therapist believes you are unsafe, the therapist may reach out to an emergency contact to ensure your well-being.
Does going to therapy indicate a failure of faith?
No, therapy does not replace faith or show that you do not have enough faith; therapy simply serves as a tool for your well-being. Therapists have diverse beliefs but will respect yours without imposing their own. If desired, you can request a therapist who integrates your beliefs and practices during your consultation or at any time in your treatment.
Is Your Facility ADA Compliant?
Yes, our facility is ADA compliant from the parking, to the ramps, to the bathroom. We are committed to ensuring that our space is accessible and accommodating for all individuals. If you have any specific needs or concerns, please let us know so we can make the necessary arrangements to ensure your comfort and accessibility.
Does a therapist prescribe medication?
Therapists, such as psychologists, counselors, and social workers, do not prescribe medication. They provide talk therapy, counseling, and behavioral interventions. However, psychiatrists and other medical professionals, such as psychiatric nurse practitioners and primary care physicians, can prescribe medication. If a therapist believes medication may be beneficial, they often refer clients to a psychiatrist or another medical provider for evaluation.
